2nd Annual Pro Hockey Development Summer Program

I am passionate about my role with the Howard Huskies because I enjoy coaching all levels of hockey players. That being said I get very excited for summers where I can focus on training some of the top players in this area. I am one of the lucky few that made it out of this area to play Junior, NCAA and Professional. I want to help my guys develop and guide them to the highest level of hockey they can play. I am the Mid Atlantic Scout for the Islanders Hockey Club (All Levels AAA and Jr A NCDC/Premier/Elite) and have an extensive peer network of Tier 1, Prep, Junior, and College coaches. Most of these guys are former teammates or coaches of mine. Some of them will be coming on the ice with us this summer.

I am excited about the “crop” of players that are coming up right now. I am invested in these guys as I have seen their rapid development in the last few years. If you haven’t already, it’s a good time to catch the wave. I have been helping lots of guys land spots at higher levels all across the board including Prep School and Junior. This is a five week intensive development program caters to players of AA caliber and higher. It will run Tues/Wed/Thurs for five consecutive weeks starting Tuesday July 9. Below you will find all of the details you need.

Last year this program was a huge success. We had one group of 25 players and 3 goalies. The players that participated made leaps and bounds on and off the ice, which carried directly into the start of their regular seasons. That included players in New England Prep School, Junior A, Tier 1, and AA levels of hockey.

This year we will host two groups of 25 skaters to be separated by age and skill level. The Older group will be Jr/Prep/Midget aged players. The other will be our younger players U15/Bantam and below. I am thrilled to bring Brian Woodard on board. He is the Owner/Head Strength Coach of Maryland Strength and Human Performance at the newly renovated facilities in the Gardens Ice House. Brian and I have put together a truly awesome strength program for the guys. Brian is very experienced in Hockey specific training so it has been easy for us to “speak the same language”. Hockey training is very specialized. Brian and his staff will guide and push our players to gain strength and explosiveness during the workouts. More information can be found on Brian at his website

The agility/speedwork program we will follow is from Div 1 UMass Hockey(National Runner Up in 2019). I will make slight reductions to the workload as I see fit. The boys will be doing high intensity sprints for 25-45 min span (including rest time) depending on the day of the week. I will lead the on ice sessions with Elliot Tarash (former Jr. A player/Howard Bantam AA Head Coach) and additional staff daily. They will be very up tempo and challenging skill development sessions-the guys love them. We will do edgework, power skating, tons of skill work and small games. We will also be joined throughout the program by the guest coaches listed below.

Yoga is added to this program because this practice has endless benefits for us and is trending with the Hockey Players in the world. These sessions will teach using the breath to increase endurance plus hockey specific mobility and core work. We will also practice ways to use visualization, breathing, and focus to achieve peak performance- the illusive “flow state” or “the zone”. This refers to the peak level that the best athletes in the world strive to achieve each time they play their sport. Working on the mental part of the game and mindfulness certainly leads to positive change in our players on and off the ice.
